More than 400 years ago, the world did not know about the existence of Australia. Until the beginning of the XVII century, this continent was inhabited only by Aboriginal tribes living there for more than 40 thousand years.

Australia, or the Australian Union - is the only country that occupies the whole continent. It is surrounded by water on all sides. Australia is located to the south-east of Asia, from the east it is washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean, from the west by the Indian Ocean. The depths of the continent are rich in minerals, nature is diverse. Most of the people live on a narrow fertile strip of the east and south-east coasts, in two largest cities in Australia – Sydney and Melbourne, as well as in its capital - Canberra. This area includes four states and two territories.

Domestic areas of Australia - flat, waterless, scorching heat of the desert - practically uninhabited. The largest is the deserts of Simpson, Gibson, Big Sand and the Great Victoria Desert. Huge dunes drift through their sandy expanses, poured by the wind. Only Aborigines, native inhabitants of Australia, inhabit these harsh places. About 228 thousand people lead a traditional way of life, although many have already moved to the city. Most Australians are descendants of immigrants from England, other European countries and South-East Asia.

Sydney is the oldest and largest city in Australia. It was founded in the 18th century as a colony for criminals and guards. There are 3,6 million people live in this city now. The city lies along the shores of Port Jackson Bay. The huge Sydney Harbor Bridge connects its shores. Sydney is a business, industrial and tourist centre of the country.

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and the second largest city in the country. In its architecture, both the old and the new style get along. It was founded by farmer John Batman in 1835. When in 20 years the gold was discovered on the territory of Victoria, its population increased dramatically. Melbourne became the main seaport, a commercial and industrial centre of the state.

Founded in 1829, the city of Perth is the capital of Western Australia; trade and finance are concentrated in it. His appearance reminds of the British roots of Australians. You can find many buildings in the classic Victorian style here.
