Рассказ о географических открытиях (Geographical discoveries)

Today we know the most remote corners of the globe. But hundreds of years ago, people sometimes didn’t even suspect that there were any other countries in the world besides their own. Few daredevils dared to go to an unknown distance.

Sailboats, capable of withstanding long hikes, appeared only at the beginning of the XV century. Since that time, the era of great geographical discoveries began. European travellers, such as Christopher Columbus, have changed the course of human history.

Land trade routes between Europe and the East from the XV century were captured by the Turks. Goods from the East were so expensive that European merchants began to look for a direct sea route to India, bypassing the Turks. Navigators who set off in search of this path discovered America, Australia, islands and archipelagoes unknown to Europeans. Of course, many of the lands they discovered were settled a long time ago, and the “discoveries” ended in the usual plunder, the conversion of the natives into slavery and the destruction of their culture.

Сегодня нам известны самые отдаленные уголки земного шара. Но сотни лет назад люди порой даже не подозревали о том, что на свете существуют какие-либо другие страны, кроме их собственной. Немногие смельчаки отваживались отправляться в неведомую даль.

Парусники, способные выдержать дальние походы, появились только в начале XV века. С этого времени и началась эпоха Великих географических открытий. Европейские путешественники, такие, как Христофор Колумб, изменили ход истории человечества.

Сухопутные торговые пути между Европой и Востоком с XV века были захвачены турками. Товары с Востока стоили так дорого, что европейские купцы стали искать прямой морской путь в Индию, минующий турок. Мореходы, отправившиеся на поиски этого пути, открыли Америку, Австралию, острова и архипелаги, неизвестные европейцам. Конечно, многие открытые ими земли были давно заселены, и «открытия» заканчивались обыкновенным грабежом, обращением туземцев в рабство и уничтожением их культуры.
