Castles were built in Europe in the IX-XVI centuries. It was a time of constant wars. Small wooden fortresses gradually overgrown with stone walls - inside could fit the population of the whole city. Some of them stand still.

Thick walls and towers reliably protected the castle from enemies. Inside the castle was placed the whole world in miniature: noble feudal lords and ladies, officials, soldiers and servants, stables, gardens, cellars with provisions and underground casemates. The best place for the castle was a hill surrounded by a river or a moat. It was possible to cross the moat by a drawbridge. Often castles were built in the mountains, among the inaccessible rocks.

A properly built castle with a well-organized defence could withstand months of siege. With the advent of artillery, it became impossible to protect the locks, and their architecture began to change. The castle no longer served as a fortress and began to turn into a palace.

Правильно построенный замок с хорошо организованной обороной мог выдержать многомесячную осаду. С появлением артиллерии защищать замки стало невозможно, и их архитектура начала меняться. Замок больше не служил крепостью и стал превращаться во дворец.
